This week’s TOP CMO

Norman Guadagno, CMO of Mimecast

On this week’s episode of TOP CMO, Ben Kaplan interviews Mimecast CMO Norman Guadagno on decluttering the collective mind to get rid of distractions and focus on what matters most. Being truly data-driven instead of just hoarding it. Finding incentives to improve a marketing team’s performance. Building trust through repetition and constancy. All of Mimecast’s strategies to become a well-oiled machine, always seeking betterment.

Norman believes in testing, working through trial and error. He compares it to a child learning how their body works. They run through the house, bump into stuff, get up, and keep going, assimilating what’s good and bad for them. It is important to create a safe environment for them to explore. But with the right precautions and reminding them booboos are natural and constructive, they can figure the whole world out.

Don’t miss out on his perspective! Catch this week’s episode and read our articles on his toddler analogy and how to tidy up your to-do list!

IN THE RED CORNER, dating from 1876, used in over 200,000 libraries and 135 countries: the Dewey Decimal System!

IN THE BLUE CORNER, dating from 1897, and used by many large academic libraries: the Library of Congress Classification!

Which one will win? Which one has classified the most books? Which one was Marilyn Monroe’s favorite? No clue, but come learn about them in this week’s episode!

Top lessons from top leaders

As we expand our list of TOP CMOs and prepare a very special piece collecting the best advice in our catalog, we’re constantly learning from top-of-the-line leaders. Here are six short highlights:

  • Having a long to-do list may make you feel important, but it only prevents you from giving your all to the essentials. Humans aren’t good at multitasking.
  • Trust grows from saying you’ll do something and doing it, repeatedly.
  • Choose your team carefully. It’s not all technical skill, don’t neglect interpersonal abilities. Make sure people complement each other with different energies.
  • Don’t take the seat at the table CMOs have earned for granted. Be bold and make yourself heard.
  • Try. Test. Fail. Get back up. Learn.
  • Be fast and adaptable, the world won’t wait for you.

A call back!

Helping from within

Kanishka Cheng spoke to Ben Kaplan for the We Are San Francisco podcast about what it takes to effectively improve the service the San Francisco authorities provide to their citizens. Having worked in various government offices, Kanisha is well-versed in the processes and procedures behind the city’s operations.

In times of crisis, governments, non-profits, and other organizations need to be as efficient as possible. Putting the people first is the priority. If you haven’t yet, check out her episode and listen to her story now!
