Quote of the week

“Really understand your consumer, and don't ever think that you're them, because that's when you really are doomed.”

Margaret Jobling, CMO of Natwest Group

This week has been unboredified!

Thanks But No Thanks, or the Thanksgiving episode

I think we’ve made it very clear we have our own holiday calendar by now. So here we go again: it’s Thanksgiving when we say it is!

While this celebration might be a beautiful opportunity to connect with extended family to many, it is not the case for everyone. For Hayes, coming home from college to learn he was to spend Thanksgiving with his dad’s side of the family was the worst news he could receive. Old traditions. Plain food. Dull relatives. The holiday was ruined.

Or was it?

On this week’s Unboredify! episode, listen to Hayes’ letter to his roommate about how his family had seemed to ruin every single good thing about Thanksgiving until a gassy surprise (or two) changed everything.

Listen to the episode now to find all the surprises Hayes’ family had under its sleeve to truly unboredify Thanksgiving!

This week’s recommendations

Advice from a TOP leader

We have interviewed nearly 100 CMOs and CEOs who have not only told us all about how they overcame the biggest challenges and how they faced adversity but also given us something even more precious: advice for up-and-coming leaders. The future of marketing. Here are some TOP tips on being customer-centric and applying for jobs from one of our TOP CMOs.

LOUISE BARBER

VP Global Head of Marketing of DHL Supply Chain

  • Support customers and make sure that they can be successful in their fields of business.
  • Have clarity of purpose around what it is you’re doing for the customer.
  • Connecting what you're doing to a customer need is one thing, and really believing that you're adding value is another.
  • If you can't be yourself in your application, and in your interview, it's going to be very difficult to be yourself when you're in that role.
  • The way you present yourself initially sets the tone for future interactions and expectations.
  • Take the time to research the company, its culture, values, and the specific requirements and responsibilities of the position to tailor your application and fuel your genuine enthusiasm for the role.
  • Infuse your application with elements that showcase your zeal: highlighting relevant experiences, emphasizing skills that align with the role, or sharing anecdotes that demonstrate your commitment.

Our recommendation of the week

While we are passionate about corporate podcasts like TOP CEO and TOP CMO, we know not everyone might be as fond of it. So if you’re seeking recommendations for podcasts on other subjects, you’ve come to the right place! This week, we’re getting philosophical –but in a very beginner-friendly way.

Philosophize This

Hosted by Stephen West

“Philosophize This” is a friendly guide through the labyrinth of philosophical ideas, all served up easy to digest.  The host encourages listening in chronological order, as the show starts off as simple as possible and listeners can grow educated as the episodes run.

Whether you're a total philosophy rookie or a seasoned contemplator of life's big questions, West's laid-back approach makes even the most complex topics feel like a casual chat.

Sure, he's got a touch of personality that might stir up a chuckle or a raised eyebrow. Some might even call it controversial, but hey, isn't philosophy all about stirring the pot? Each episode feels like you're grabbing coffee with a knowledgeable friend who's breaking down the evolution of human thought. It's a coherent introduction that doesn't take itself too seriously.
