Instruction manuals are ubiquitous. Everyone has a first time using an appliance, building furniture, or taking medicine, so they have to be there. They are needed and inescapable. Since their standardization in the 20th century, handbooks have become straightforward and logical, sometimes to the point of boredom and redundancy. One might feel inclined to ditch them altogether and go with one’s gut, but more often than not it leads to less-than-optimal results. So how do we go from here?

Follow these three simple instructions (with pictures!) to learn more about the importance of instruction manuals, their associated difficulties, and how they can be fun!

1 Unveil the utility

NOTE: This might all be stuff you already know!

1.1 Self-service

Manuals are meant to help you get something done without needing to resort to others to help you. This is particularly useful when you don’t have access to or contact with the expert!

1.1.1 But Google!

Sure! Google it! But you will never find a more reliable source than the original manufacturer or producer of the item! And if you’re thinking, “Well, I found the company’s webpage”, guess what? You’re just reading the digital version of the manual!

1.1.2 But support!

The whole point of an instruction manual is avoiding having to call support and do something on your own!

1.2 Never too careful

Going forward with no direction can be very dangerous, especially when it comes to medication or machinery. Following instructions can help you ride smoothly through the process and achieve the best possible result. It helps us understand what, how, when, and where everything should be done to get what we need.

2 Assume the hardships

2.1 Density

Manuals can be thick and long. At times it may feel like you can skim through many sections without missing anything. This is a big fault on behalf of the editors, for it may cause you to miss an important piece of information.

2.2 Unclarity

Instructions give directions on physical things through a visual medium. Misunderstandings are bound to happen. Text descriptions can be hard to link to the actual object. Steps might be confusing or contradictory. Pictures may be inaccurate or even harder to understand.

2.3 Mistakes

Sometimes booklets can come with errors, or what seems like it, at least.

2.3.1 Mismatches

It may feel like the text misses a step, because the difference between the one before and the one after is too big, and the latter includes something your version doesn’t. Or there are parts included that don’t seem to go anywhere.

2.3.2 Mistranslations

Original versions might be in a different language, and translations may not make sense without proper editing and reviewing. This might hinder the process.

3.1 Comedy

Some editors have resorted to humor to alleviate the chore of going through the instructions. Getting a smile on people’s faces can make them get through it more swiftly.

3.2 Imaging

Crafting manuals consisting mostly or fully of images can facilitate things. Moreover, it prevents the pain of mistranslations. Double whammy!

3.3 Personality

Notice how the first section was a bit sassy, the second one plain serious, and this one a mix? Giving manuals tone can make them more engaging. You agree, right?!

3.4 Functionality

Handbooks that go beyond directions can be deeply valued. After teaching how to use an oven, the same booklet gives you ideas and tips on what to cook and how. Thank you, editors!
